MIS Lab

The MIS Lab is an advanced resource for courses in Information Systems, such as systems analysis and design, data base, operating systems, telecommunications, object-oriented programing languages. It is a closed lab requiring a special card key to its access and is located in room BC 313A (third floor of the Business Center). Most of the software available in University of Baltimore open Labs are not present in the MIS Lab. Group support systems are also not available in the MIS Lab, but rather in the ISRC DSS Lab.
The MIS Lab has the following equipment:
- 15 Dell PCs, Pentium III running at 450 MHz, with 256 Mega Bytes of main memory, 9 and 6 Giga Bytes hard-drives, 8 Mega Bytes of accelerated graphics, 17 inches monitor, CD-ROM, 100 Mega bits Network Interface Card. Another 10 Pentium IV Dell PCs have been installed recently. Each Dell PC dual-boots in Windows 2000 and Red Hat Linux 7.2.
- Dell PowerEdge Server, Pentium III running at 500MHz, with 512 Mega Bytes of main memory, one 9 and two 13 Giga Bytes hard-drives, 8 Mega Bytes of accelerated graphics, 17 inches monitor, CD-ROM, 100 Megabits Network Interface Card. The Server runs in Windows 2000 and uses a NAT (Network Address Translator) to provide Internet access to the MIS Lab LAN.
- HP 2100TN network printer, 1200 bpi, 10 ppm. The printer includes an internal printer server (hardware) and is directly addressable by the PCs using TCP/IP.
- 3COM Fast Ethernet Hub, running at 100 Megabits. The Server (4th floor) is connected to the LAN (3rd floor).
The following basic software is available in the MIS Lab:
- file manager, text editor, network utilities, telnet, ftp and Web clients (Windows 2000 and Linux).
- Norton AntiVirus, Paint, Calculator, Microsoft Office (Windows 2000)
- GIMP, Icon Editor, Paint, PostScript viewer, Image Capture (Snapshot), Calculator, Sticky notes, Perl, C++, Java (Linux).
- FrontPage 98 (Windows 2000)
- Oracle 8i (NT and Linux)
- MySQL (Windows 2000 and Linux)
- Students can download and install the Apache Web Server, WordPerfect 8 and StarOffice Suites, for their personal use at the Lab (Linux).

The MIS Lab is open whenever the Business Center is open. The hours posted above are for technical support with hardware and software problems with the machines in the Lab. Lab cards are dispensed to students enrolled in specific classes from Monday to Thursday and Saturdays in the GA Lab hours. No help for assignments, etc, will be provided by the Lab technicians.
